JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Workshop Manager (Chief Mechanic)
Department: Workshop / Fleet Management
Reports To: Operations Director / General Manager
Supervises: Assistant Mechanics, Auto Electrician, Workshop Assistants

Job Purpose
To oversee the Company’s workshop operations by ensuring that all company vehicles are serviced, maintained, repaired, and kept in a safe and roadworthy condition. The Head of Workshop is responsible for managing workshop staff, controlling maintenance costs, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and maximizing fleet availability to support business operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance
Plan and oversee preventive maintenance schedules for all company vehicles.
Ensure prompt diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and transmission faults.
Monitor vehicle condition and ensure all vehicles remain roadworthy.
Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer and company standards.
Minimize vehicle downtime through efficient workshop planning.
Workshop Management
Manage the day-to-day operations of the workshop.
Allocate work to mechanics and monitor productivity.
Supervise and evaluate workshop staff performance.
Ensure workshop equipment and tools are properly maintained and accounted for.
Maintain cleanliness, order, and safety within the workshop.
Fleet Administration
Maintain complete maintenance records for every company vehicle.

Monitor vehicle service intervals and schedule servicing accordingly.
Keep accurate repair histories and maintenance reports.
Prepare monthly reports on workshop activities, repairs, vehicle availability, and maintenance costs.
Emergency Response
Coordinate emergency breakdown repairs.
Arrange recovery of broken-down vehicles.
Provide technical support during vehicle emergencies.

Qualifications
National Certificate, Diploma, or Higher National Diploma in Motor Vehicle Mechanics or Automotive Engineering.
Journeyman Class One or equivalent trade qualification is an added advantage.
A valid Class 2 or Class 4 Driver’s Licence.
Supervisory or management qualification is an added advantage.

Experience
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a qualified mechanic.
At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisory or workshop management role.
Experience maintaining light vehicles, heavy vehicles, trucks, and commercial fleets.
Experience using fleet maintenance systems is an added advantage.

Working Conditions
Based at the Company Workshop.
May be required to work after hours, weekends, or public holidays during emergencies.
Frequent exposure to workshop environments, machinery, grease, oils, and vehicle recovery operations. Authority
The Head of Workshop has authority to:
Allocate work within the workshop.
Recommend procurement of spare parts and workshop equipment.
Recommend disciplinary action and training for workshop staff.
Recommend vehicle repairs, servicing schedules, and replacement of unserviceable fleet.
Stop any vehicle from operating if deemed unsafe or unroadworthy.
