Mechanical Fitter – FMCG Manufacturing

Employment Information

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform planned, preventative, and breakdown maintenance on production and packaging machinery.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical faults to minimise downtime and maximise plant availability.
  • Install, assemble, align, and commission mechanical equipment.
  • Overhaul pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, bearings, motors, valves, and other production equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections, lubrication, and equipment servicing in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals.
  • Complete maintenance documentation and update the CMMS system where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, quality, health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Assist with plant improvement projects, equipment modifications, and new machinery installations.
  • Work closely with production teams to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Participate in standby, call-outs, and shift work when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Qualified Mechanical Fitter with a recognised Trade Test.
  • N3 Mechanical Engineering qualification will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 3–5 years' post-trade experience in an FMCG, food manufacturing, or production environment.
  • Strong knowledge of conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings, hydraulics, pneumatics, and packaging equipment.
  • Basic electrical fault-finding knowledge will be advantageous.
  • Experience working with preventative maintenance systems (CMMS) is beneficial.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and troubleshoot mechanical failures.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
