RECRUITMENT OF AN INTERN TO SUPPORT IMPLEMENTATION OF HEALTH & NUTIRION ACTIVITIES OF THE McGOVERN-DOLE FOOD FOR EDUCATION-NDOKK PROGRAM

CONTEXT & RATIONALE:

 Catholic Relief Services The Gambia in partnership with Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education MoBSE and Caritas Gambia are implementing McGovern-Dole Food For Education and Child Nutrition Program Na Dindingo La Karango Leh Kumayata (FFE-NDOKK) in The Gambia. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from October 2022 to September 2027 in 186 schools in all regions of country (Kanifing Municipality: 13 schools, West Coast Region: 47 schools, North Bank Region: 36 schools, Lower River Region: 46 schools, Central River Region North and South: 24 schools and Upper River Region: 20 schools). 43 of these schools are Madrassas recognized by MoBSE and coordinated by the General Secretariat for the Coordination of Madrassa education in The Gambia (AMMANA). The medium of instruction in these Madrassa schools is Arabic. 

For increased impact and sustainable quality implementation to be realized, FFE Nutrition component strengthens implementation by recruiting an Intern to support and assist field level activities and nutrition program monitoring in close supervision of the NDOKK Nutrition TA (Based at CRS)and WASH Officer (Caritas).  

Objectives of the Activity

1. To assist in providing technical backstopping to cooks, mothers’ clubs and teachers within project schools and communities:
   • Support targeted interventions in health, nutrition and hygiene related activities as part of school health and nutrition including school meals to ensure meals are safe and nutritious as well as peer health club activities’ implementation.
   • Asist targeted support to community nutrition activities which includes promotion of adoption of optimal Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF) & childcare practices and Family Led MUAC.
2. Assist in strengthen collaboration with MoH and NaNA Regional Staff to promote sustainability:
   • Strengthen collaboration and capacity within MoH structures for continued support beyond the project lifecycle.
   • Support regular monitoring and feedback sessions to identify gaps and inform improvements.

Expected Results

1. Improved food safety and hygiene practices in schools

• Demonstrable improvements in school-level food safety and hygiene conditions, as evidenced by periodic monitoring assessments and follow-up actions implemented in supported schools.

2. Increased adoption of key nutrition and hygiene practices

• Improved health, nutrition and hygiene behaviors among students (e.g., consumption of vegetables served as part of the school meals, handwashing practices etc) and strengthened nutrition and childcare practices at community level, based on observations and supported activity follow-ups.

3. Strengthened monitoring and use of data for program improvement

• Timely and accurate collection, documentation, and reporting of monitoring data, with evidence of its use to identify gaps and support corrective actions to improve health and nutrition outcomes.

Methodology

Catholic Relief Services aims to improve its Mc Govern Dole FFE -NDOKK Program’s health and nutrition target outcomes by recruiting an Intern to provide technical support to key health and nutrition strategies and activities. In this vein, the NDOKK Intern in collaboration with NDOKK Nutrition TA and Nutrition and WASH Officer will support health and nutrition activities including the implementation/monitoring of the following activities:

1. Quarterly supportive monitoring of the provision of safe and nutritious meals in all NDOKK schools.
2. Provision of Technical support to Peer Health Club related activities.
3. Regular supportive monitoring, coaching and mentoring of community nutrition activities
4. Provide quarterly feedback to CRS 

 The intern will be stationed at CRS office, attached to the Nutrition TA with scheduled visits to all Project Intervention regions.

During the six (6) months program, the intern will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional team that will help him/her to;

• Develop practical community mobilization and facilitation.
• Build technical capacity in school meals monitoring, and nutrition programming.
• Gain hands-on experience in nutrition screening (MUAC), behavior change programming, and integration of health, nutrition, and WASH activities.
• Enhance professional competencies in field operations, teamwork, stakeholder coordination, and CRS program quality implementation standards.

Duration: 

The arrangement is expected to last for a period of six months starting September 2026 and end in February 2027.

REQUIREMENTS

• Must have completed bachelor’s degree in Nursing, public Health or related field within the last two years
