Dis-Chem Pharmacies has an opportunity available for a Phlebotomist for their Melrose Arch store, Sandton Region. Responsible for performing safe, accurate, and efficient blood collection and basic health screening procedures in a private primary health care clinic. The role supports physicians and nursing staff by ensuring high-quality specimen collection, patient preparation, and adherence to clinical and infection-control standards while delivering excellent patient care.


Minimum Requirements:
Essential:

  • Grade 12/ Matric
  • Certificate or Diploma in Phlebotomy or related health care field
  • Minimum of 2 - 5 years’ experience in total rewards, experience in a private clinic or primary healthcare setting
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems
  • Basic life support (BLS) or first aid certification
  • Proven competency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection
  • Computer literate – MS Office
  • Willing and able to work retail hours


 
Job Description:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following established protocols.
  • Label, handle, store, and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis accurately.
  • Ensure proper documentation and tracking of collected specimens.
  • Maintain patient comfort and safety during all procedures.
  • Conduct basic screening procedures such as:
    o Blood pressure measurement
    o Blood glucose testing (finger-prick)
    o Body mass index (BMI) measurement
    o Total Cholesterol
    o Lipogram
    o HB testing (finger-pick)
    o Urine dipsticks testing
    o Pregnancy testing
    o Vital signs as required
  • Record and report screening results accurately in patient records.
  • Verify patient identity and explain procedures clearly to ensure informed consent.
  • Provide reassurance and professional support to patients, including children and anxious individuals.
  • Address patient questions and concerns in a courteous and confidential manner.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control standards at all times.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Dispose of sharps and biohazard waste according to clinic policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Prepare phlebotomy equipment and screening tools before procedures.
  • Monitor and report stock levels of consumables and supplies.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of equipment where applicable.
  • Accurately document procedures and results in electronic or paper medical records.
  • Comply with clinic policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support clinic workflow and collaborate with healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Housekeeping must be in accordance to Dis-Chem standards. Make sure that your workstation is
    always clean and tidy.
  • Adhere to Dis-Chem Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to Dis-Chem Uniform and personal appearance policy
